Solar roof tiles are a premium alternative to standard panels. The right question is not simply “what is the cheapest system?” but “what is the best roof, energy and design solution for this property?”
Typical UK budget ranges
Installed prices vary widely because a solar roof tile project can include both roofing and electrical work. Use the ranges below as planning bands, then compare itemised quotes for your actual roof.
| System type | Likely budget position | Best for | Cost sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard solar panels | Lowest upfront cost | Fastest payback, existing roofs | Roof access, inverter, scaffolding |
| In-roof PV panels | Mid-range | Clean flush finish on new roofs or reroofs | Roof covering, weathering kit, labour |
| Solar roof tiles or slates | Premium | Design-sensitive homes and slate-style roofs | Tile count, detailing, specialist installer availability |
| Full solar roof replacement | Highest and project-specific | Luxury self-builds and complete roof transformations | Whole-roof specification, lead times, structural work |
What affects the cost?
- Roof size and usable area: larger roofs can generate more power, but not every square metre is suitable.
- Roof complexity: valleys, dormers, chimneys, rooflights and multiple pitches increase labour and detailing.
- Roof condition: a tired roof may need repair or replacement before solar tiles make sense.
- System choice: integrated panels are usually more cost-controlled than tile-by-tile premium solar slate systems.
- Battery storage: batteries increase upfront cost but can improve self-consumption and evening usage.
- Electrical upgrades: consumer-unit work, inverter location and cabling routes can all affect the quote.
What should a solar roof tile quote include?
A strong quote should be transparent enough that you can compare like-for-like proposals. Ask for the following:
Roofing scope
Tiles or slates supplied, roof preparation, membranes, battens, flashing, weathering details and scaffolding.
Solar scope
PV capacity, inverter, optimisers if used, monitoring, cable routes, commissioning and certification.
Battery option
Battery size, usable capacity, backup capability, warranty length and whether it is installed with the solar system.
Performance assumptions
Annual generation, shading losses, orientation, pitch, export assumptions and estimated self-consumption.
VAT relief and incentives
Current HMRC guidance allows a temporary zero rate of VAT for qualifying installations of energy-saving materials, including photovoltaic systems, until 31 March 2027. Qualifying electrical storage batteries were added to the relief from February 2024. The installer should confirm how VAT is treated on your quote.
The Smart Export Guarantee can also pay eligible homeowners for exported electricity. SEG rates vary by supplier and tariff, so it is worth comparing export options after installation.
Payback: what really matters?
Solar roof tiles usually have a longer payback than standard panels because the upfront cost is higher. The calculation improves when the project coincides with a roof replacement, when aesthetics matter, or when the system helps avoid a separate roof covering cost.
The strongest payback drivers are self-consumption, electricity prices, battery use, export tariff, roof orientation and how much of the roofing cost would have happened anyway.
